Analyses

Think Visegrad aims to prepare analytical materials each year focusing on the most important priorities of the Visegrad Group while reflecting the most current and urgent topics. Most of the analyses are produced for the internal purposes of the governments of V4 and the International Visegrad Fund; therefore, they cannot be published. In 2016, we also wrote a specific type of analysis – V4 Presidency Mid-Term Review – which is available for download below.

As of 2023, reflecting the intense debate with the V4 policy planners at the foreign ministries and the International Visegrad Fund, the consortium redefined the methodological parameters for Think Visegrad’s analytical outputs. Instead of preparing 4 extensive and detailed long-term analyses focusing on the most important priorities of the Visegrad Group, as well as 6 to eight short-term analyses reflecting the most current and urgent topics, the consortium prepares the analyses in the following formats:

Policy/Issue Briefs:

  • Size: from two (2) to a maximum of four (4) pages
  • Scope: narrow, focused on the subject in question
  • Description: contains factual data but is also enriched by broader context and/or evaluative aspects

Scenarios:

  • Size: from five (5) pages to eight (8) pages
  • Scope: from a minimum of three (3) to five (5) scenarios. The number of scenarios might vary or be dependent on sound analysis. Scenarios can also contain other sub-scenarios
  • Description: consists of two main parts. The first part is dedicated to a clear description of the state of affairs, assumptions, variables, SWOT analysis. The second part describes plausible courses of events, from the most to the least probable scenario, including reasoning why an individual scenario is more or less probable and what are the main drivers for its direction

Thematic Analyses:

  • Size: from eight (8) pages to twelve (12) pages
  • Scope: case study or comparative analysis
  • Description: identifies and compiles relevant data, identifies patterns in data, while flexibly employing various qualitative or quantitative research methods in order to generate new insights and concepts derived from data, including commonalities and contrasts

Policy Papers:

  • Size: from four (4) pages to ten (10) pages
  • Scope: focus on a prescriptive question, analyze a particular issue or situation, and argue for a solution that will address that issue or situation in the form of policy recommendation(s)
  • Description: convinces the target audience that the preferred and recommended position is the correct one. Policy recommendations are based on supporting evidence. Policy papers may contain a very short analysis of a particular issue or situation (one page) but do not supplement policy briefs

The total number of analyses, as well as the number of individual types of analyses, is not fixed and varies depending on the priorities of the Visegrad Four presidency country.

A list of all produced analyses by year and type can be found below:
